Excerpt: ... ADDRESS BY PROF. A. C-TWINING. In a state of imperfection like that which this world exhibits, where the lines of frailty are engraven deeply upon every plan and device even of the most benevolent and wise of our race, it is often useful to take a scrutinizing review of our most cherished and best established systems and institutions. This is, upon every subject, the direct road to correction and improvement; and it is well when the active spirit of an age like our own makes it a highway well beaten by the steps of inquirers after truth and the means of usefulness. Whatever lighter attractions such a review may fail to possess, it may yet be dignified with the high interest of practical value,--especially to all those who, by experience of the fluctuations and agitations of human opinions, have been taught the necessity of settling their own ideas upon a basis well laid and thoroughly examined. These views, if they are just, form a sufficient reason for my occupying your attention, on this occasion, by the consideration of a subject simply practical,--although one which has not often perhaps been treated of in a distinct form. In a day when colleges are multiplied, and are fixing their stamp upon the mind of this nation, it is of extreme importance to scrutinize the first principles and elements of so common and effective an institution. I am going, therefore, to inquire what, in the circumstances of this nation, a college ought to be; what, in its religious bearings and system of spiritual means,--what, in its plan of intellectual discipline and internal government,--and finally, what in its relation to science at large, irrespective of the particular system of instruction and exercise carried on within its own walls.
