Excerpt: ... that S. Ambrose would have counter-acted the known Principles of the Christian Church of his own and former Ages? For as he was a Man of untainted Probity, so his distinguished Learning could not suffer him to be ignorant of the Principles and Practice of the Christian Church. Now in all the Monuments of the antient ecclesiastical Writers, there is no Passage upon which there is more Stress laid, by the Patrons of the independent Church Power, than upon this; and therefore I suppose every Reader, that has a due Regard to Antiquity, will wish it to be distinctly cleared; especially if what hath been already advanced and debated in this Dissertation, hath given any favourable Impressions of the Doctrine for which I contend: As likewise on the other Hand it cannot fail to rivet the Prejudices of those who stand for the Independency of the ecclesiastical Authority, if this Piece of antient History (hall be found to be directly opposite to our Doctrine: And this makes it necessary for me to be the more careful to take off every Shadow of Difficulty that seems to arise from this Fact under Examination. And my Answer shall be in four Particulars, viz. 2. First, Although the Authority of Ambrose is deservedly great j yet if he, or any other, have have at any Time acted unwarrantably, or stretched the ecclesiastical Power beyond its just Limits, it was certainly a Fault; for good Men have their Infirmities; and in all Matters of Duty we are to be determined, not by Examples or the Authority of Men, but by those stated Rules which God hath given us for our Direction.
