DAVID SANFORD, SECOND PASTOR OF THE CONGREGA-TIONAL CHURCH IN WEST MEDWAY, DELIVERED OCT. 2, i860, IN PRESENCE OF A GREAT NUMBER OF HIS DESCENDANTS, BY HIS SUCCESSOR, REV. JACOB IDE, D. D. We are happy to meet in this place to-day so many of the descendants of the former pastor of this church. Respected friends, we welcome you to the place which was once the home of your venerable ancestor. We welcome you to the sanctuary erected by his own flock,--the place in which they and their descendants have since his death worshipped the God of their fathers. We are glad of an opportunity to renew our acquaintance with those of you whom we have formerly known, and to become acquainted with those who have, as yet, to us been strangers. We should be glad to see you at our homes, and to extend to you our hospitality. We are not uninterested spectators of the important enterprise in which you have been engaged, and which you have so successfully accomplished. We rejoice that the former pastor of this church, who has slumbered for so many years in the darkness and silence of the tomb, without any external token of his existence or his worth, has now over his remains a monument which will remind the present generation, and those who shall come after them, that he once lived, and acted an important part in the world,--a monument which may, without any unnatural stretch of the imagination, indicate the elevation of his genius, the purity of his character, and the firmness and stability with which he stood up for Jesus.
