Excerpt: ... DISCOURSE IX. CAN YOU RECOGNIZE OPPORTUNITY? He who has reached mature years without acquiring wealth usually gives as the excuse for his condition that he has been handicapped by a lack of opportunity. The average person is quick to see what the other fellow has done, but somehow he fails to see what he can do for himself. He is a living proof of the truthfulness of the Welsh proverb which says, "The fat always looks richer in the other fellow's pot." The trouble has been that his mental attitude has been wrong. He has failed to look deep enough into his own pot. He has not learned to recognize opportunity, or, if he has, he has not had the courage to form a partnership with the dame. Opportunity is a generous coquette, quite indiscriminating. She plays no favorites, and abhors handicaps. He who sees her hedged about with handicaps has something the matter with his vision. He needs the services of an oculist. There are instances, of course, in which persons are so isolated from the affairs of life and whose environments are so seclusive as not to give them the usual opportunities to acquire wealth, but these are so rare as not to be worthy of serious consideration. The Master said, "Seek and ye shall find." This injunction referred to spiritual things, of course, but it applies with marvelous aptness to the subject under discussion. The person who will put himself in a mental attitude to see opportunities will find more right at hand than he can possibly accept. The United States has made wonderful strides in the creation of wealth, the greatest progress in the history of the world.
