THE WORKINGMEN APPROVE THIS INVESTIGATION. By Mr. Call: Q. I understand that the laboring men of Pittsburgh in your labor associations, as well as the laboring men of other cities in the West (whose letters we have here), have expressed a desire to you and to this committee that you should be heard upon these subjects, and have sent you for that purpose.--A. Yes, sir. Q. Is it a general feeling among the laboring people in that section of the country that it is desirable that a committee of the Senate should be appointed and charged with the duty of hearing the facts, as they regard them, relating to their condition, and the opinions of the workingmen in relation to legislative measures for their relief?--A. Yes, most assuredly. I will state here as a fact that the workingmen hail with delight the appointment of this committee to make this investigation and the work of this committee. They think it is wise and necessary. Q. They appreciate the fact that this committee desires that every laboring man shall be heard through the representatives that he selects in regard to his condition and his opinions as to the measures required for relief?--A. Yes, sir. Q. I am glad tohear your statement on that point, for I confess that my sympathies are very greatly with the laboring people, and I am in favor of whatever practical means may reasonably be adopted to extend relief to them and improve their condition in every respect.
