The modern artist-craftsmen have restored to dignity many materials that heretofore were not considered costly enough to use, and have combined with them the so-called "semi-precious stones" to obtain good color harmonies. French or Swedish copper, sterling silver, and eight carat gold, with such stones as the aventurine, sardonyx, amazonite, azurite, chrysophase, tourmaline, amethyst, lapis-lazuli, opal, and turquoise matrix may be utilized in brooches, lavallieres, bracelets, belt buckles, scarf-pins, etc., the stones being used as color accents in the design. The equipment for this work need not be expensive. The following is recommended: Tools Small raw-hide mallet. Bench. Small vise. Bunsen burner. Blowpipe. Small shears. Pliers, half round,flat and chain. Tweezers. Small repousse hammer. Large awl. Gravers for leaves and flowers. Wooden mallet. Ring stick. Jewelers' saw frame and saws, No. 0. Slate. Burnisher (half round). Jewelers files; barette half round, knife blade and needle files (round, triangular).. Drill stock and fine drills. Steel tracer (duplex). Repousse tools (3 or 4). Chemicals Sulphuric acid. Soft soldering solution. Nitric acid. Coloring solutions. Baking soda. Jewelers' rouge. Crystal borax. Metals Soft copper, 16 to 22 B & S Commercial chain (fine or gauge. coarse, as desired). Sterling silver, 16 to 28 gauge. Soft solder. Sterling silver wire, medium Silver solder, weight. Gold solder. Eight carat gold. Miscellaneous Pitch block. Emery cloth. Charcoal block. Chamois skin. Binding wires. Lead block. Crocus cloth. Iron or steel block.
