THE Philosophical Principles O F MOSES Asserted J and defended, &c, THE principal Reasons that have prevented the Mofaic Account of the Creation from being generally understood and admired, are chiefly these two. First, The forming Hypotheses, and then endeavouring to force Scripture to support them. Men first imagine what they would have Scripture fay, and then twist and torture the Words to make them justify it: And Scripture is not permitted to speak for itself, and yet is made to answer for human Errors. This has been very much practised in construing the philosophical Parts of Scripture. Secondly, The Mistakes in Philosophy, which some Years since were spread with great Zeal, and forced upon Mankind under the Authority of great Names, and the supposed Credit of mathematical Demonstration, have very much contributed to the Neglect, that Moses and the Prophets have met with on the Head of Philosophy. B As As to mathematical Demonstration, founded upon the Proportions of Lines and Circles to each other, and the ringing of Changes upon Figures, these' have no more to do with the greatest Part of Philosophy, than they have with the Man in the Moon. The Principia of Philosophy are the invisible Parts of Matter, and their Properties or Qualities; the Cause of Motion, and the Means by wxSich it is continued. When they can find oVit the Difference between two Atoms, of Gold e. g. and Water, by Algebra; and tell us what moves the Earth, by Geometry; or can by the Help of Fluxions give any account why Fire burns, either the solar or culinary Fire: When any of this is done by the Help of Matfematics or Numbers, it will be time enough to talk of Mathematical Principles.
