CT'ILE Editor of this curious and instructive History, assumes no other Merit to himself than that of collecting the Work from his learned Uncle's Manuscripts with the utmost Caution and Fidelitv: For tho' he pretends not to that Great Man's Erudition, he won't allow him or any Man to outstrip him in Candour and Truth. These, as he inherits them from a long Line of upright Ancestors, he proposes to convey down unimpeach'd and unimpair'd, along with the Family-Estate, to the latejl Posterity. Had the Polesworths been no honester than some of their contemporary Writers, the World would not be so well inform' d, as it now is by Means of this accurate and impartial History, of many curious and interesting Particulars well worthy the Notice of the present Generation and os being transmitted to Posterity. For the virttfous Uncle: was tamper'd tvith to stifle certain Fails, and palliate others^ so early as 1712; and the Nephew, so late as the last Summer, was no liss vigoroujly attack'd by the Great and Powerful, to varnish certain Transactions, and shade certain Persons from the Sun-jhine of Truth. But fe strong was their native Abhorrence of Corruption and Difingenuity, that each of them in their Turns spurn'dfrom them the proffer'd Bribe with Indignation, and treated...
