Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XIV. ON BREEDING SHEEP IN BUENOS AYRES, AND ON THE MANAGEMENT OF AN ESTANCIA, OR CATTLE-FARM. [For the information contained in the following pages, on the subject of sheep-breeding, I am indebted to Mr. John Harratt, of Buenos Ayres ; and for that on the management of an estancia, to Don Patricio Lynch.] The climate of Buenos Ayres is favourable for breeding sheep; the cold in winter never being so intense as to require the sheep to be housed. No snow falls on this side the Cierra del Tandil; nor is any food required to be provided for the sheep in winter: they can feed all the year in the open country. It is not necessary at any season to take them off the land in search of food, as in Australia ; nor are they subject to any loss by storms, except from neglect or mismanagement. The land of this province is very fertile, generally presenting a vast sea of verdure. The parts which have been longest occupied are the best adapted for sheep, while the new lands are preferable for the breeding of cattle. The Pampas between Buenos Ayres and the river Salado, to the south, are the best lands at present occupied by sheep; and from which they are driving the horned cattle. If the country were properly provided with roads and bridges, superior land for sheep-breeding would probably be found a little north of the Cierras, which extend from Cape Corrientes to Tapalqueen. A league of land will feed from twelve to fourteen thousand sheep, without any necessity of storing food, or removing them from the land during the worst seasons; in good seasons it would feed fifty thousand.
