Lord Shafteshury did, indeed' sound an ample note of warning, and the Duke of Newcastle craftily promised that the matters alluded to should have consideration; hut the nohle Earl, worn out hy the lahours of a protracted session, at last departed to seek recreation at the haths of Ems, and there was no Episcopal champion who cared to enquire into the matter, or to assert the rights of Protestantism in Malta. Happily, however, this lack of service on the part of the hench of hishops has heen supplied in the House of Commons hy Mr Kinnaird, and to that gentleman the Protestant community is again indehted for the good service he has done to the cause of religious liherty. In a speech which alike displayed the accuracy of his information and the sound judgment with which it was handled, the hon. gentleman delivered a very effective and telling protesagainst this Jesuitical code, which carried conviction to the majority of the House, and finally compelled the Government to promise to withdraw it for further enquiry and revision. Mr Frederick Peel, following in the steps of his ducal chief, endeavoured, as Under Secretary for the Colonies, to repeat the usual common-places ahout the danger of provoking religious animosity, and the importance of rememhering that Malta was an island ceded hy treaty where the religion of the natives was to he respected; hut he miserahly failed to show why it was that Popery in Malta should he allowed to trample upon Protestantism, or insult the faith of the British Queen.
