As before stated, Israel Dodge, one of the sons of Tristram Dodge (senior), early emigrated from Block Island, and settled at New London, in the Colony of Connecticut. Among the new inhabitants, between 1670 and 1700, recorded in "Calkins' History of New London," is Israel Dodge, as purchasing and settling on a considerable farm in the North Parish of New London in 1694, which was forty-eight years after the first effort to create the settlement of the town in 1646. In 1705, at the session of the Queen's (Anne) Court Commission, among those returned as settled on Indian lands is Israel Dodge. This same tract of land--now Montville--is yet vested in his descendants. The first record of freemen of New Shoreham, Block Island, as we have seen, was in 1670, and contained his name. He may, then, have been born about 1649 in England. The records of the Town Clerk of New London, prior to 1781, were destroyed, with other valuable papers, by the burning of the town, its court house, and most of its dwellings, in the barbarous raid of Benedict Arnold, September 6, 1781; but a portion 'of the Probate Records and Registry of early Deeds escaped. Among these we find his will, proved 1745; which being taken as the year of his death, gives him the advanced age of ninety-six years. Israel Dodge (Junior), his son, had, in 1743, enlisted for the "French War," in the contingent of Colonial Troops that served on the expedition against Cape Breton; and in the next spring (1744) is returned as having died in camp from fever. John Dodge, another son, born at New London in 1727, and died in Connecticut, 1792; married, October 23, 1748, Lydia Rogers, of Pomfret, Conn.
