Dr. Theodore Leighton Pennell (1867-1912), was a Christian missionary and a doctor who lived among the tribes of Afghanistan. He founded a missionary hospital in Bannu in the North-West Frontier of British India, now Pakistan. For his work he received the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal for Public Service in India. In addition, to this book, he wrote "Things Seen in Northern India". He died of septicemia on March 23, 1912 at age 45 in his own hospital at Bannu. He has probably contracted that disease from the patients in his hospital. He had married a lady doctor from India. His work was carried on by his wife, Alice Maud Sorabji Pennell, who wrote several biographies of her late husband, including "Pennell of the Afghan frontier : The life of Theodore Leighton Pennell", A hero of the Afghan frontier: The splendid life story of T.L.
