In preparing the work, the object has been, in the First place, to include a larger amount of modern science than is found in the text-books which are generally accessible to those who are commencing the study of Natural Philosophy, and at the same time to give as much of conciseness and clearness to the different branches of the science as was consistent with their nature and importance ;and, in the Second place, to prepare a text-book which should be a medium between the larger works and those generally used in our academies and higher institutions. The following are the principal features of the work: At the head of each section an analysis is given in the form of propositions, in order that the student may have a general view of what the section contains. The advantage of this the author has found, by long experience, to be very great, as it fixes in the memory the leading and fundamental principles of the science, and habituates the mind to analyze and systematize the various topics which may come under review. A nother feature of the work is the introduction of examples in the form of problems, in order to render each principle familiar, and to enable the student to make a practical application of his knowledge.
