The common usage of these words, note ch. 28, and cf. L. and S. Lexicon. irCo-Tiv. Kriig., after Bauer, tr. Verbiirgiing, bail, or security if he would rise and quit the sanctuary. On the distinction between lepbv and W/iecos, which are, however, often used synonymously, see Arn. r(p.evos,--i.e., rep.vdp.evos, Diis separates ager, includes the consecrated ground, and all the land of which the usufruct was devoted to the temple. Upov seems to express all the actual buildings, as well the oroaf and dwellings of the priests, as the sacred edifice itself. Thus the Ipbv is said to be iv refiirn, Herod, ii. 112. Na6s is the great central shrine where the deity himself was supposed to dwell, and where his statue stood. There were, however, smaller vaol, like the side chapels in Roman Catholic cathedrals. Ta irpao-o-du.eva--the transactions then actually going on,--i.e., with Xerxes. Chapter CXXXIV.--(a.) eiroioCvTo. The true imperfect, describing an action never completed--were for arresting, cf. iairivSovro, iii. 24, and with Arn., ipurdovro irap O$k (ksisovtos, Herod, i. 68. Iv-rg oSip--in the street, a not uncommon use of the word, especially in N. T. dfave?--secret, unseen by the rest. irpoKaTiufnryetv--anticipated them in taking refuge. (b.) oCkTia. Either a chamber attached to the temple itself, or a small house in the sacred precinct. Miov SvTa--'when they knew that he was housed.' (vSov is one of those adverbs which must be regarded as formed from the accusative. They denote, as I have endeavoured to express, not a simply local position as the dative, but motion terminating at a...
