It is to you, and your excellent lectures, that I am chiefly indebted for having had my attention first called to the subject of Legal Medicine: and I shall be exceedingly glad if this slight testimony of my respect and esteem, make it in any degree known to the Public how much I am, my dear Sir, Your very obliged and faithful servant, W. In the whole range of subjects on which medical men are called upon to give their evidence in courts of justice, there is, perhaps, not one more complicated or embarrassing than that of Infanticide: it receives little or no illustration from the routine of ordinary practice, and requires considerable previous knowledge and patient inquiry for its due investigation. An experience of some years in teaching Forensic Medicine, has, however, led me to believe that all the material points might be stated clearly and popularly within a moderate compass. The result of such a persuasion is the production of this little work. It may appear, perhaps, somewhat singular, that Dr. Hunter's tract should be placed in the foreground: but all who are in any degree acquainted with the practice of our Criminal Courts must know that it were a very questionable office to undertake to compose a treatise on the subject, with any pretensions to utility, without referring frequently to the most influential and popular tract on Child-murder hitherto produced in this country.
