The sincere desire will soon ascertain the most efficient means, be they by tongue or pen, by word or deed, by private or public effort, by solitary endeavour or ready cooperation. That complex result which we call character indicates the design of its formation as surely as the organs of sense do theirs. Without a special divine commission, merely by the consciousness of what he was and could effect, Christ might have employed the language which he used to Pilate: "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice." Sermon VI.--The Temptation Of Christ. "Then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil" (Matt. iv. 1). At his baptism " God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the holy spirit and with power." He then, and thereby, became the Christ or Messiah,--terms which simply mean the Anointed. He entered on his office with all its dignities and perils, its labours, sufferings, and promised recompense. He was the Sent of God for the deliverance of Israel, if Israel would hear his voice; and for the salvation of all nations by his instructions and example, his revelations of the divine character and proclamation of the divine mercy, and especially by his resurrection from the dead as the exhibition of man's universal destiny to revived and immortal being. By this anointing he became King or Judge--terms of course to be taken figuratively, as the anointing itself was figurative; but of which, in this case, the figurative meaning is far nobler than the literal, as the unction of miraculous power and wisdom is above that of material oil, by whatever forms consecrated, or to what...
