The salt scorn of the alkali desert flickered at them, who were the salt of the world, the children of Abraham's promise. The Hebrew Bedouins leant on their staff sealed with the laws. They had chosen this rod of iron instead of Aaron's rod of almond flowers. The budding rod had been offered them as a guiding staff of peace; the land flowing with spiritual milk and honey should have been their portion. They spurned the rod into another brazen serpent. This Hebrew caravan, on its endless pilgrimage across the sands of Time, rested only to repent in sackcloth and the ashes of its camp-fires, which were as the cinders of unholy rites. And from its changeful places of repentance it cried aloud, " Jerusalem is fallen, is fallen! Our holy and beautiful house is burned with fire! Jerusalem is fallen away before men I " The dust of the Prophets was in its sandals. The iron staff struck flinty fire from the inhospitable earth. The Hebrew faces were like scrolls of parchment upon which the Prophets had written their lamentations. They gazed intensely and expectantly beyond them, and their expression was a hieroglyphic, such as the Egyptians set in stones upon the sandy wilderness. Their heart was a stony problem also, a dark place of wisdom and mystery. They mourned their Temple and awaited their Messiah. But their Temple had fallen in ruins and their Messiah had arisen in glory. Some set up the golden calf in other lands, but the parchment of the Prophets was under the gilt mask they wore, and they saw visions on a tower of prayer which ever looked towards Jerusalem. All the written tragedies of Greece and Rome are but fuel for the Hebrew...
