It further offers to supplement these scholarships through a Loan Fund upon which a student may draw to an amount equal to a scholarship. These scholarships have been donated by the New York County Red Cross Chapter, the Boston Metropolitan Chapter, and by other organizations. They are in Columbia University, New York City; Simmons College, Boston; School of Applied Social Science at Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio; School of Nursing and Health, University of Cincinnati, Ohio; and School of Civics and Philanthropy, Chicago. The value of a scholarship is $250. A circular setting forth these facts has been sent by the Red Cross Bureau of Town and Country Nursing Service to approved hospital training schools of the country and to numerous nursing organizations. It is hoped that other Chapters or organizations may further the health work in their communities by similar offers of scholarships, or, where this is not possible, may encourage nurses to avail themselves of scholarships given by others, and otherwise promote the cause of public health nursing. Thousands of nurses are ready and willing to respond to a call from the Red Cross for war service, while comparatively few are prepared for the constructive community health work so important to conserve the interest of the home. Oftentimes, too, nurses may be found for city work when it is very difficult to find women with adequate hospital training who have knowledge of public health nursing and who are willing to go to the smaller communities. Nurses serving under the Town and Country Nursing Service are not subject to call for other Red Cross work outside their own community. A high-school education or its equival...
