This precious ointment was, in all probability, intended for the refreshment and decoration of her own person. It is, however, cheerfully sacrificed to the honour of the Saviour. To honour Christ is an object dearer to Mary than the decoration of her own person. It is thus, if influenced by similar feelings, we shall feel it our duty and privilege to exercise self-denial, and make sacrifices for Christ. "The maid will forget her ornaments," and luxuries will be relinquished, when the circumstances of his poor members, or the advancement of his cause in the earth, call for the sacrifice. Though some censured, and from various motives, Mary's conduct, it was her exalted privilege to receive the commendation of her IiOrd. He declares, " She hath wrought a good work on me." O what joy to Mary, while experiencing the uncharitable censures of others, thus to be commended by the Saviour, who knew her heart! There is one expression in our Lord's commendation of Mary which deserves our particular notice, and which could not but have deeply affected her heart: "She is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying r As if he had said, " In a few days I shall be dead and buried; and therefore there is one good thing more, that you are not aware of, that this woman has done for me; she has anointed my body beforehand against the burial, and been directed by Providence to do that to me yet alive, which she would have desired, and you would easily have allowed her to do to me when dead."
