Excerpt: ... ESSAY. IS IT CONSISTENT WITH A PROFESSION OF THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION, FOR PERSONS TO USE, AS AN ARTICLE OF LUXURY OR OF LIVING, DISTILLED LIQUORS; OR TO TRAFFIC IN THEM? AND IS IT CONSISTENT WITH DUTY, FOR THE CHURCHES OF CHRIST TO ADMIT THOSE AS MEMBERS, WHO CONTINUE TO DO THIS? A Satisfactory answer to these inquiries depends on the manner, in which several other questions intimately connected with them must be decided. These are; In what light is the use of intoxicating liquors to be viewed? If the use of such liquors be immoral or inexpedient, are those who consume them, or traffic in them, to be regarded as deserving of Christian animadversion and discipline.? And supposing this to be the fact, have the churches of Christ power to debar persons of such a character from their communion? When these questions are rightly answered, our subject may be considered as fundamentally discussed, with regard to its practical bearings upon the duty of Christian churches. For if it can be shewn, that those who consume intoxicating liquors or traffic in them, are justly exposed to Christian animadversion and discipline, and that the churches of Christ have power to debar persons of this description from their communion; then we shall be prepared to make the final inquiry, which has a direct bearing on the principal subject of our discussion, viz. Does duty or expediency demand the exercise of this power? I propose, in the sequel, to discuss each of these questions, in the order that has now been suggested. I.
