Excerpt: ... I eminent man and the bottle-holder, possibly he might have converted it both to the public amusement and his own advantage. A doctor frightened at a bottle and its turbid contents! Prodigiously incredible! Moreover, in addition to the above luminous and instructive illustration of the learned author having "established his case" of the Thames water being a "horrible mixture," he has published in the "Memoir" letters, and extracts from letters, which he received from twelve other existing doctors. Whether the latter were aware, when they wrote, that their lucid and instructive communications were intended to be made public, may admit of a doubt; but whoever may have read them, with a view to obtain accurate and satisfactory information respecting the genuine properties of the water supplied to the metropolis, must have been greatly disappointed. Several of them give an unfavourable opinion of the water sent for their inspection. One "cannot find terms sufficiently expressive of the awful effects it may be likely to produce upon the health and even lives of the inhabitants of the metropolis;" another has "no doubt of a continued use of such water, without filtering or depuration, being, in the end, capable of producing deleterious effects;" a third is "not prepared to prove that its influence on the health of the inhabitants of the west end of the town has been deleterious, but conceives it likely to become so;" but another candidly affirms, that " whether this impure state of the water has any influence on the health of the inhabitants of Westminster, is a question that would admit of much controversy." These are fair specimens of the opinions expressed by the "eminent professional men" on the subject; and some of these Memoir, p. 137, 138, 139, 140. were...
