RULE III.--Two or more nouns, S.c. in the singular number, joined together by the conjunctions either, neither, or, nor, require a verb in the singular number; as, "James or Joseph intends to go." Observations. 1. When pronouns, or a noun and pronoun, of the singular number, and of different persons, are connected by or or nor, the verb should agree with the nearer; as, "I or You are to blame." 2. Nouns or pronouns of different numbers, connected by or or nor, require a verb in the plaral number; as, "he or They were in fault." In this case, the plural noun or pronoun, if it can be conveniently done, should be placed nearest the verb. Sentences To Be Coreected. Whatever he undertakes, either his pride or his folly disgust us. Neither man nor woman were there. It is probable that neither of these are the meaning. There are in many minds neither knowledge nor understanding. There are many faults in spelling which neither analogy nor pronounciation justify. A tart reply, a proneness to rebuke, or a captious and contradictious spirit, are capable of embittering domestic life, and of setting friends at variance. You or I are in fault.
