HE church dedicated to Mary the Mother of our Lord now shall occupy our attention; and well worthy it is of notice, for it is one of the prettiest churches in the neighbourhood. Of course it cannot compare with Holt, or Hanmer, or Gresford, which are remarkable in very many points; yet for all that, it may compare favourably with most of those in the villages round. As has been mentioned, it is traditionally supposed to occupy the site of an ancient Saxon church, which possessed a beacon on the top of the tower for signalling to the neighbourhood whenever an invasion was apprehended. But whatever there was, nothing now remains of Saxon date, unless we except a curious stone which was discovered some years ago in the east wall of the churchyard. Mr. Bloxam, an antiquary of great eminence, pronounced it to be Saxon. There is upon it a representation of a figure, half length; the two hands are folded together over the heart. It has probably been the top of a stone coffin. Near it was found another stone also used in the building of the wall with some rude lettering carved upon it, apparently of the same date, but there is considerable difficulty in deciphering any of the letters. Canon Thomas, in his History of the Diocese of St. Asaph, thus describes the exterior:--"The church, St. Mary's, consists of chancel, nave, with north and south aisles, and a western tower, the general character being perpendicular, i.e., about 1450-1500, but with one or two features of earlier pointed work." Lewis, in his Encyclopcedia, says the style is Early English, and that "the tower which appears to be of later date is supposed to have been built when the church was reduced in dimension by the removal of the transepts and the original tower at the intersection which...
