Excerpt: ... FROM ONE TO THREE YEARS If your child is not perfectly obedient at this age and has not yet learned to walk, you may give him the five lessons, described in Part I. After your child has begun to walk, then you may give the following lessons. In teaching obedience to children, from one to three years of age, just as in the case of children less than one year old, it is advisable to begin with a negative command, in the first part of a lesson, for the sake of the check which you can thus easily secure to prevent disobedience. It is always better to prevent disobedience, when it can be done gracefully, than to permit a disobedient act to be carried out and then try to correct it. Suppose you have a two-year-old son whom you wish to teach obedience and you lead out in your lesson with a positive command. If the boy refuses, you do 133 r not know what to do. You would hesitate to let the incident pass lest the boywould do the very same thing again, and to force him against his will would leave a feeling of resentment. By carrying out the instructions as given in detail in the series--starting out with the negative and always ending with the positive--you can complete each lesson in a friendly spirit with the least possible trouble or exertion. LESSON 1 Aim To give the child further drill in obeying the commands, "Don't touch" and "Give to me." Preparation Place a straight chair near the right arm of a rocking-chair and have concealed a watch and chain. Definite Insteuctions First of all, assume an optimistic, cheerful attitude; lead the child by the hand over to the chairs.
