The disease, which terminated in Mr. Blakely's death, was brought into his family by his second son, Edward, who was cut off in the fourteenth year of his age, June 10, 1837. This interesting youth had from a child manifested a strong predilection for the sea. Having finished his education, and being still anxious for a seafaring life, his father allowed him, in the spring of the year, to go a voyage to the neighbourhood of Newcastle, that he might make trial of the sea. He returned home seriously indisposed, apparently with a violent cold. In a few days he was attacked with a putrid sore throat, which terminated in his death, in the short space of three weeks. Mr. Blakely felt this stroke keenly, as a father, but he suffered with resignation, as a christian; and seems to have had a singular presentiment about this time, that though his son would not return to him, yet he should himself soon go down to the grave to his son. When the dear youth laid dead, he said to his wife, "death has entered our house, and he has not done with us yet." Afterwards he repeatedly said, "my work is nearly done, I shall soon leave you." Most of the members of his family experienced a slight attack of the disease, which had brought death into the house, but none of them were seriously ill. Mr. Blakely was as well as he had been for a considerable time, till about six weeks after his son's decease, when symptoms appeared of his having caught the infection. When he was taken seriously ill, his conviction that his end was near was greatly strengthened, and seemed to give him unspeakable delight.
