Excerpt: ... APPLICATION OF THE METHOD. 140. Cousin, in his brilliant lectures on the history of philosophy, has referred all system of philosophy to four classes, sensationalism, idealism, scepticism and mysticism. 141. The sensationalist begins with things, such as we see around us, assuming their reality, and attempts to account for thought, and so, through thought, of a thinking agent, the mind, and through both, the existence of God. He fails to account for thought, or ideas; denies the reality of mind; becomes a materialist, and ends in being an atheist. 142. The idealist begins with thought; tries to account for the reality of things; being unable to do so, he denies their substantial reality; confounds substance with properties; objectifies properties; and becomes a pantheist. The materialist of necessity ascribes to mere matte the power of thinking; but the pantheist makes thought or ideas, as he prefers to call it, substantial, 143. Then comes the sceptic, who, seeing the absurdity of these conclusions, doubts and denies them both alike; distrusts all reasoning, all speculation; ridicules 'philosophy; and ends in believing, or professing to do so, whatever he chooses to have regarded as true; or, in believing nothing, if that suits his humor better than to profess to have any positive opinion. 144. Finally, persons of lively emotions and ardent mature, dissatisfied with mere denial, doubt and distrust,:assert very confidently their own sentiments as absolute struth. They are at first mere sentimentalists; but generally become incomprehensible mystics; and often end in being senseless fanatics. 145.
