Feom the first triumphal journey of the Apostle Paul, the Hero of the people of Christ, we return again to the Church at Jerusalem. We left them just at the time when, on the death of Herod Agrippa, the persecution of the Christians had ceased. The suspicious caution of the Roman government would not allow the crown to descend to the son of Agrippa, who was at that time seventeen years of age, although he retained the title of king. Judea passed away and continued under Roman administration, whilst Agrippa after some years obtained a principality in Lebanon, a little later, the territory which formerly belonged to Philip--the provinces between Lebanon and the Hauran mountains, and at last, the finest part of Galilee, the cities on the Sea of Tiberias; the patronage of the priesthood remaining undisturbed with the royal family. In this manner did the prospect of a rapid elevation to independence and power vanish again from before the eyes of the deceived people. The effects, indeed, of the policy of the deceased king continued, and procured for Judaism a certain degree of splendour. Of the royal family of Adiabene, i. e., the territory of the ancient Nineveh on the east side of the Tigris, the queen Helena and her son Izates went about this time formally over to Judaism.
