It exhales from the capillary arteries, and the superfluous quantity is absorbed by vessels appointed for that purpose; that which remains being of use to prevent the tunica albuginea and vaginalis from growing together; but when by any means the absorption is prevented, an accumulation naturally takes place. This may happen at any time of lise; nay sometimes children are born with it. We are not as yet able to determine with certainty the cause of this disease; though as in it the spermatic vessels are very often found varicose, Ruysch has conjectured that such a state of these vessels produces the disease. In general we are certain that whatever causes prevent the due absorption of the liquid aboveinentioned, must likewise produce this kind of hydrocele; and, when these causes operate with great great violence, as in the case of bruises and hurts, the disease will come dn very suddenly, and increase to a great bulk in a very short time.
