Not illustrated. 1788 Excerpt: ...the overthrow of the fourth beaft, are not told us. Nor is it afTerted that the ftone was cut out before the divifion of the empire into the pollarchy. For the feet of the image are reprefented as fubfifting before the ftone was feen, ch. ii. 33, 34. 41. They are reprefented as confiding part of iron, and part of clay; a compound that denotes divifion, ftrengtb impaired, and a mixture with barbarous nations. Whence we may colle6t, that the ftone was not cut out in the time of Auguftus, or his fucceflbr; when the empire was undivided, its ftrength unimpaired, and not yet in want of alliances with foreign nations, nor diftrafted by their incurfions. 'Then (after the days of Theodofius the Great) f by the incurfipn of many northern nations, they brake into many fmaller kingdoms; which are reprefented by the feet and toes of the f image, cornpofed part of iron, and part of clay.' Neither is it fuggefted, v. 34. that any long interval elapfed, between the cutting out of the ftone, and its fmiting the image. Is it nor, alfo,.a contradiction to afiert, that 'Daniel expounds the jione, as that lading king 'dom the God of Heaven fhould fet up; that 'kingdom which Jhould not be deftroyed, nor left 'to other people; tut Jhould "break in pieces, and confume all thofe kingdoms, and itfelf Jhall fiand faft for ever;' and at the fame time, to maintain that the prophet f expounds not the ftone's becoming a mountain.?'
