The early settlers of Pennsylvania were called colonists; because they were a company of people who came from Europe, and formed a colony in this country. For some time after their arrival here, their efforts were chiefly directed to the procuring of food and shelter by their own industry. Their places of shelter from rain and storms, were either caves, or rough log houses one story high, and having but one or two rooms on the ground-floor. The place chosen for their dwelling, was mostly near a good spring of running water. In these simple habitations, they and their families lived, and began to clear and improve their farms. The native Indians continued to dwell in their wigwams, wherever they happened to be, as long as they chose to remain among the white people. Thus, the settlers and the Indians lived together in harmony and peace; so that the colonists, being void of fear, did not think it needful to provide any other fastening for their doors, than a simple wooden latch, to prevent the winds from blowing them open, and to guard against the nightly entrance of wolves, bears, and other vermin. In these rough houses, or cabins, often without a single, pane of glass in the windows, the mother and her infants would sleep in perfect safety alone, while the husband and careful father was absent on business, or to procure food for his family. It was a custom among the native Indians, long before the settlement of the country by the white people, that when an Indian was hungry, he had the right to enter the wigwam Spell Pennsylvania; settlers; colonists; Europe; colony; efforts; country; chiefly; rough; dwelling; running; habitations; families; Indians; wigwams; define it.
