Excerpt: ... a sense as to constitute blasphemy, and to merit death.- The superscription, it must be remembered, was written by Pilate, who was in all probability utterly unconscious of its import, and it was intended by him as a mark of contempt for the Jews, exasperated perhaps by their inhuman and sanguinary eagerness for his crucifixion. It was however a plain declaration of the character of Jesus Christ, as the king of Israel. Let us also advert to the tenour, and spirit of the contemptuous, and unmanly revilings of the multitude, while he was yet hanging on the cross. "If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross;" if thou art, what thou claimedst to be, prove thy Omnipotence, by coming down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests, and the elders said, " He saved others, himself he cannot save. If he be the king of Israel (not merely a human king of Israel) let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him." Matt. xxvii. 40--42. See Bishop Tomline, Art ii. Abbadie, 245. Dr. P. If then Jesus Christ himself, and the Jews his witnesses, are to be believed, we must admit this fact; that our Lord was crucified for blasphemy, which blasphemy consisted in making himself one with God,, and God; and this he did when he claimed to be the Son of God. We are now arrived at that chef d'ceuvre of criticism, the objections to my interpretation of the word 'Io-o?; but previously to entering upon the task of refuting them, I repeat, in opposition to his authority, and that by which he is supported 5 that the word throughout the New Testament does not ever signify likeness, in any sense, but that of equality.
