Excerpt: ... fourteen or fifteen feet; they are divided into three parts by fine columns; over the middle and largest space is a fine arch, and the whole finished with a beautiful frieze and cornice. St. Ann's Street, on the west side of the North Bridge, is now pulled down, and a fine row of buildings erected within nine feet of the bridge, the parapet wall taken down, and an arch thrown over between the bridge and the buildings, in order that the passage to the shops may not interrupt the passage on the bridge. It is expected that a similar row of buildings will be erected on the opposite side of the bridge, which, when finished, will render this part of the city very interesting.. Churches.--There are two churches for the established religion, entirely of modern architecture, in the New Town, the one dedicated to St. Andrew, the other to St. George: this relic of popish superstition, the dedication of every new church to a saint, is singular, in a country where nothing but strict prcsbyterian forms are recognized by the legislature. St. Andrew's Churchis an oval building, eighty-seven feet by sixtyfour within walls, a handsome portico fronting the street U supported by four columns of tlie Corinthian order, f.om which a spire rises executed in good taste one hundred and ninety-six fret high to the top of the cock. St. George's Church, Charlotte Square, presents a front pf one hundred and twelve feet to the ea'f, with a portico, supported by foul' ionic column thirty-five feet high including the capitals, they are elevated on an extensive flight of steps, forming the entrance into the church, which is one hundred and twenty-eight feet in width, and can accommodate one thousand six hundred persons.
