It would betray total ignorance of the habits and customs of ladies like Mrs. Hodgson, to suppose that she could live on terms of intimacy with the Vickers ladies and not give an account of all the bewildering news she had heard; besides, being a sensible woman, she was fond of a good gossip. It is a means of mental improvement not much recommended by the authorities, but as it is, practically, the only way in which information enters the feminine head, it must be made use of by those who desire to be informed. And people on gossiping terms have the implied understanding that each side shall contribute as much as they can. On Saturday morning, therefore, she took her way down the street, as she expected the "men-folks" were out of the way, and, as she expected also, Emma came out of the garden, and Mrs. Vickers out of the kitchen with greater interest than common.
