As Religion may be considered to be affected by the system of science promulgated in the previous chapters, we have reserved our remarks on the connexion between them for a concluding chapter. It may seem, to many readers, that we supply arguments from which the materialist could still further advance his cause. When we say that matter is possessed of inherent life, and that this life is capable of forming any production on earth spontaneously, according to the nature, condition, and position of the materials commingling, not only in the mineral and vegetable kingdom, but in the animal kingdom as well, it appears a most astounding assertion. But when we state that the same atomic matter spontaneously produces the mind, not only in the unintellectual animal but in man, and that those wonderful instinctive powers which seem to baffle the wisdom of man, in the bee and the beaver, are only manifestations of the same power inherent in the atoms of matter; might not the infidel exclaim, what mora do we want?
