Caroline arose, and encouraged the child to enter by an assurance that she had hot any thing to fear, and the Bullfinch'spipe so effectually seconded her invitation that the little stranger advanced, bearing in her hand anautumnal Rose which she placed before Henry, saying it was the last in her garden, but that she had gathered it for him. He inquiring her name, she replied 'Gertrude Agnes Hamilton;' adding, that she must now.leave them, as her mamma would be displeased if she staid long, although she had given her leave to take to the sick gentleman a Rose. From that time the visits of Gertrude gradually increased; until at length they became daily, and always accompanied by some offering--fruit, flowers, or a piece of cake. When her store failed she introduced Lufra,' an Italian Greyhound, to 'play' with Henry, and even proposed the addition of' Eleanor,' her doll, to their society, to which offer he acceded with a gratitude suited to the acquisition.
