The night had just bidden farewell to the forest, and the shy day was peeping over the tree-tops, whose leaves swayed to and fro in the breeze as if whispering to each other. A single robin began clear and loud to chant his greeting to the May morning; he was answered by a thrush from a hazel thicket, and then, as if in reply to the tuneful challenge of the two master songsters, the whole feathered choir raised their matin anthems, although the first faint streaks of the sunrise were just appearing in the east. Sixty leagues eastward from old Fort Duquesne, upon this morning in the year of our Lord, 1755, Braddock's army, with its cumbrous artillery and baggage wagons, lay encamped, the white tents of the grenadiers and officers gleaming in the pearly morning light, its close chain of sentinels extending around the entire bivouac ground. In the front and at the rear of this chain of pickets light-horse videttes were posted to guard against a night surprise, and their vigilance had more than once prevented disaster. The drum beat the reveille, the bugle sounded the morning call, and as if by magic the camp, before as silent as though death brooded over it, became all bustle and activity.
