As he stood now in the little music-room, waiting for her to come and bracing himself inwardly for the task he had set himself to accomplish, he recalled to his mind the old professor,s laughing words of warning, when he had communicated the Signora,s proposal to him, and smiled sadly as he thought of how completely they had been fulfilled. There was a miniature picture of the Signora standing on the piano, which he had often admired. He took it up and regarded it long and intently. Then, with an irresistible impulse, he pressed it to his lips and kissed it with passionate fervour. 'Who would have thought that it would be like this?, he murmured. Involuntarily his mind turned fox an instant to Margaret Welby. 'Poor Maggy,, he thought to himself. 'Can she have felt like this and suffered like this? And I was unaware of it?'
