Excerpt: ... DISCOURSE XIX. Ephes. iv. 10. He that descended is the fame also that ascended up far above all Heavens, that he might fill all things. WE have seen the sirst Step of our Blessed Saviour's Exaltation, viz. his coming forth of the Grave, and rising again from the Dead the third Day, the Subject of the sifth Article of our Creed: I come now to the Sixth, which will lead us to two Steps more of his Exaltation, viz. his Ascension into Heaven, and his Sitting at the Right Hand of God; both which are contain'd in thofe words: He ascended up into Heaven, and there Jittetb at the Right Hand of God the Father Almighty. I begin at present with the sirst of them, which is the second Step of his Exaltation; to wit, His Ascension into Heaven. And because the sirst Inquiry must be into the Person that is afsirm'd to have ascended, our Text in answer to it tells us, that he who descended into Hell, is the fame Person that is here believ'd to have ascended up into Heaven, yea, far ahove all Heavens, that he might fill all things. In treating whereof, I must, First, Explain the Nature, and shew the Truth of his Ascension. Secondly, I must consider the Time, Place, and Manner of this great Action. And, Lastly, What we are to learn from it. For the First, By Christ's ascending into Heaven, we are not te understand only a metaphorical Translation from a low and mean State to a higher and better Condition, which is frequently call'd Ascendi; nor yet such a sigurative Elevation of the Soul, whereby it is said to mount up to Heaven upon the wings of Prayer and Meditation, for so all Christians may may and ought daily to ascend thither: but we understand by it a real and local Translation of the natural Body of Christ from Earth to Heaven, whereby he who was born of the Blessed ...
