Excerpt: ... Genesis Section L Gen. i. i-n. 3. The Origination Of Heaven And Earth By The Word Of God THIS section is the foundation stone of the universe and the theological basis of the Bible. Its substance is taken for granted all through the Scriptures. It is strictly speaking pre-Israelite if not pre-Chaldean, and the Israelite title for God is not used in it. Its contents include the cosmogony, and take the reader forward to the beginning of the human period. It is not a cyclopaedia but a theistic outline, leading up from matter to man and from man to God, securing the mind from materialism, from the theory of the Eternity of matter, and from the worship of sun and moon--these two orbs being not so much as mentioned by name. Heaven and earth are created, i.e. originated, by One Being. The unity of nature and its dependence on the Eternal Supreme Fountain of existence is emphasized. A period of desolation and darkness is next described. The voice, the expression of the Purpose of God, is uttered. "Let there be light; and there was light." This great change--the commanding of light to shine out of darkness (2 Cor. iv. 6)--brings morning out of evening; it is a Resurrection; it constitutes the first day of the creation or re-creation week. us The second development is the order for the expanse whereby the atmosphere intervenes between the clouds above and the terrestrial waters below. The Hebrew idea of a firmament is not something solid, but a space fixed or spread out. This is the " heaven" in which the birds fly, as contrasted with the heaven in which the stars are coursing, and with the heaven which is God's abode and which cannot be defined in terms of space (i Kings viii. 27).
