In 1862 the Commissioners of National Education appropriated an area of 5 acres 2 roods 37 perches, statute measure, of the land attached to their Agricultural Institution at Glasnevin as a spade-labour farm, the special features in the management of which will form the subject of this chapter. The offices are part of the old Model Farm buildings, which were superseded by the new houses erected in 1855. An apartment formerly used as a store was divided by brick partitions into the set of small offices shown in Figure 45. Fig. 45. The place marked "loase box" can be used as such when a cow is sick or about to calve; and by putting a bar from a to b it can be used for two animals. It has also been used for rearing calves, and for other purposes. The walls, roof, and fittings of these offices appear to be too good for the use of a five-and-a-half acre farm. In remote country districts an intelligent farmer could provide himself with the same amount of suitable accommodation at an outlay of £20. The farm consists of 5 acres 2 roods 16 perches within a ring fence, and a bye corner containing 21 perches, cropped with lucerne, which is most useful in helping to keep up a supply of green food for the cows. This year, for instance, grass was later than usual; and the lucerne, which was fit to cut early in April, and fully a fortnight before the grass, has been invaluable. The second crop of grass is also late this season, and the second crop of lucerne has again come in opportunely between the last of the first, and the beginning of the second cutting of artificial grass.
