Excerpt: ... PART THE SECOND. IDEAL. CLASS I. ROMANTIC BALLADS. I. (1.) Over a bridge went a desolate bride, Singing so sadly, the arch open'd wide, And the stream listen'd and stopp'd on its way, Until its Spirit rose dripping with spray: "Sing no more, lady, so thrilling an air; "Sing something gayer, or sing no more there." "How can I sing in a livelier tone, "Leaving my husband, and wand'ring alone, "Seeking, through mountains and valleys in vain, "Simples to soothe the poor sufferer's pain." The numbers, as far as 28. are the same with those in M. Fauriel's second volume, (Part the Second.) Afterwards the second number refers to M. Fauriel's second series of ballads, towards the end of that volume. II. (2.) THE HIND AND THE SUN. By the moon's beams, throughout the silent night, And by the dewy morning's dubious light, The mountain stags and fawns outrun the wind; All but one sad and solitary hind. She seeks the gloomiest shades; and will not drink In open lawns by limpid rivulets' brink; But troubles first with mud the sparkling stream, And flies Apollo's animating beam. Long used to warm the limbs and cheer the mind, He check'd his steeds, and thus address'd the hind:--"Why dost thou keep thy drooping form aloof, "Poor beast of sorrow, from yon bounding troop? "Why dost thou shun each green and sunny glade, "On thy left side so sorrowfully laid?" "Author of light and joy! whose piercing eye "Reveals each secret, thus I tell thee why:--"Twelve barren years I hail'd the cheerless dawn, "The unsoothing moon, alone; then bore my fawn; "By my loved side two joyous years it grew, "Until the hunter met it, shot, and slew.
