Keith Swanwick is Professor of Music Education at the Institute of Education, University of London. He has been musically active throughout his career, notably as a conductor, and has taught at secondary, post-16 and university levels. He is the author of a number of books on music and music education, including A Basis for Music Education and Music, Mind and Education, both of which are published by Routledge.
The central concern of Musical Knowledge is the relationship between intuition and analysis as we engage with music. The dialectic is exposed on three levels: in considering music as a way of knowing in the context of specific research into musical experience and music education; and as a productive tension in music teaching. This final part will be of direct practical help to teachers.
