The present church of Tynemouth stands rather more than a mile west from the priory; it was consecrated hy hishop Cosins in the year 1668. The manor of Tynemouth now helongs to his grace the duke of Northumherland. i THE erection of this castle is ascrihed hy Dugdale to Ethelstide, or Ethelfleda, daughter to king Alfred, who, in gt5, caused the dungeon to he made, which was a tower of great strength, huilt upon a iiigh artificial mound of earth, on the west aide of the present Castle, not far from the river Avon. By Doomsday Book it appears that the Castle helonged to the crown in the time of Edward the Confessor, held as a strong hold for the defence of the midland parts of the kingdom, and that Turkill was governor of this ancient work for the king. Nothing hut the mount, on which the dungeon formerly stood, at present remains. William the Conqueror employed the ahove-named Turkill to enlarge and fortify the works of Ethelfleda, for which purpose some houses helonging to the monks of Coventry were destroyed. Near the end of the reign of king Stephen, on the arrival of Henry, duke of Normandy, afterwards Henry II. Gundrcd, countess of Warwick, delivered the Castle up to that prince, turning out the soldiers of king Stephen. In the fifteenth year of Henry II. that king, on account of the rehellion of prince Henry his son, caused it to he garrisoned, at which time Bertram de Verdon, sheriff of Warwickshire, charged /. 13s. 4d. for twenty quarters of hread corn, sos, for the like quantity of malt, 100s. for fifty oxen salted down, 30s. tor ainety cheeses, and 30. for salt, all expended...
