Almost 70% of mergers fail, yet deals are essential for growing world-class companies. Therefore they must use all the tools and techniques at their disposal to improve their chances of success. Applying the techniques advocated in this book can help managers beat the odds - and employees themselves - to have an impact on whether a deal will be successful both for the company and for themselves.
This book looks at the process of a merger or acquisition and pinpoints the areas where business intelligence can raise the odds of success in each phase of the deal. Using techniques developed by governmental intelligence services and a wide range of recent case studies, quotations and anecdotes, the expert authors from the renowned Cass Business School show how to build success into any M&A situation.
The first edition of Intelligent M&A was written in 2006 and published in 2007. This preceded the peak year (2007) of the last merger wave, including the excesses in a number of industries and deals (e.g., financial services with RBS’ dramatically failed acquisition of ABN AMRO as a key example), and the global economic downturn that led to a completely new way of operating for many industries and companies.
Therefore, there is a need to update the book to incorporate not just more relevant and up-to-date case studies of deals but to show the ‘new’ way of operating in a post-Lehman environment. Chapters will be comprehensively re-written and populated with new and relevant case studies.

Covering current trends in the market and anticipating changes yet to take hold, Moeller and Brady identify areas where business intelligence can improve the odds of a favourable outcome and discuss how to navigate the mergers and acquisitions minefield.

Using techniques developed by governmental intelligence services and a wide range of updated case studies, quotations and anecdotes, Intelligent M&A will show how to build success into every phase of the deal.
“Intelligent M&A is a fascinating read for anyone working in or around the fast moving M&A world. Moeller and Brady have applied the techniques of business intelligence to the M&A process to provide a unique insight into the successful execution of deals. Their experience in the field and structured approach provides valuable lessons for everyone from business students to experienced practitioners.”
—Simon Barnes, Managing Partner, Circadia Ventures LLP
Moeller and Brady reveal the real truth behind successful deals Post deal integration and attention to culture differences. A must-read for future leaders.
Robert Kelly, former Chairman and CEO, BNY Mellon
Moeller and Brady have written a thorough, thoughtful and sober account of the realities of mergers and acquisitions. They have applied their own considerable business intelligence to this increasingly heated area. This book should provide an antidote to the disease of over-paying and under-analyzing that has afflicted deal-makers in the past. Intelligent M&A? That really would be an excellent idea.
Stefan Stern, management writer, Financial Times
Moeller and Brady provide a fascinating and accessible perspective on a function that should be at the heart of the M&A process. The central argument that intelligence should be integral to M&A activity is utterly convincing and should give those about to enter the arena pause for though. I suspect Intelligent M&A will quickly be recommended reading in many business schools.
Lord Currie of Marylebone, Chairman, UK Competition and Markets Authority
