The Odes of Agrippa d'Aubigné form the second half of his collection of secular love poetry, Le Printemps. Incredibly inventive and evocative for their time, these poems are a vivid painting from a late Renaissance world blossoming into the airy and metaphysical realm of the Baroque.

Agrippa d'Aubigné (1552-1630) was a French Huguenot nobleman, soldier, and man of letters. Known in his own lifetime for religious verse and anti-Catholic polemics, his reputation today rests on his highly original secular poetry, which remained unpublished at the time of his death, only appearing in print for the first time in the 19th century. The translator, Christopher Breslin, is a poet and artist in his own right. He has translated a wide range of works from the French language, spanning the 14th to the early 20th centuries. His special focus is on French poetry of the late Medieval and Renaissance eras, and 19th Century Symbolism and Romanticism. In addition to this volume, he has also published editions of Racine's Phaedra, and Baudelaire's Spleen of Paris.
