Thomas' Rocks is a short book written to illustrate how one becomes addicted and subsequently, the process for overcoming addiction. The book is written in the style of a children's' book because often it is the child within that is suffering. The power to begin change, or to help someone else begin to change, starts with a basic understanding of what is driving behavior or "how we got here." This book attempts to provide this understanding. Thus, this book could be used by anyone who needs to understand the fundamentals of addiction or needs to explain the fundamentals of addiction to someone else. The idea for this book came about after counseling for years with men and women regarding pornography. Often I was the first person they had ever spoken with regarding a habit they did not desire but could not shake. After hearing their concerns, they were often overcome with shame and guilt. They thought that they were just bad people powerless to control something that was damaging their relationships, their self-worth, and their standing with God. They could not fight it because they did not know what they were fighting. They were like a boxer in the ring with a bag over his head.In seven years I served as a minister to young people, I never had one person that understood how they got into this situation--what was driving their need for pornography or other related behaviors. Before I gave them any explanations, I would ask them a few questions starting with, "Tell me a little bit about yourself?" With this question and a few additional questions, I would discover that the issue was not pornography or other addictions. These people were suffering from something much more serious. The discovery of underlying causes was key to taking the bag off of their heads.Helping them make some connections went a long way towards relieving their shame and feelings of guilt. In several cases, their underlying issues were so severe; I flatly told them not to worry about their pornography problem. I would then direct them to the most competent mental health specialist I could find to deal with their underlying issues. The addiction would still have to be overcome, but at least they could face the challenge with a better understanding of their situation and the tools necessary for making real progress.
