Redefining Self is a personal development workbook for Christians. With mental health disorders and career anxiety on the rise, many followers of Christ are stuck in bondage, feeling scattered, strangled and suffocated! This is NOT the will of the Lord. Paul states in Ephesians 4:17-19, “With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles (foreigners) do, for they are hopelessly confused. Their minds are full of darkness, they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him.” Paul goes on to state, “That is not what you learned about Christ. Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth the comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust (will of man instead of will of God) and deception (misleading)” (Ephesians 4:20-23).Redefining Self focuses on restoring wandering believers - individuals who love the Lord yet walk in their own flesh. Walking according to the flesh look likes overwhelming anger, self-pity, strife, anxiety, depression and addiction. The author calls these "illnesses of despair." This workbook teaches people (1) who they are in Christ and (2) how to develop a mindset that takes every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. If our identity is not established in Christ, then our hearts and minds will not line up to truth. We will look to our roles (e.g. parent, child, student, employee), our position (e.g. CEO, Waitress, Homemaker), and/or our disposition (extrovert, introvert, rich or poor) for self-worth and value. If the roles, positions or dispositions change, then we will feel off-balance and hopelessly confused. We will be like “chaff before the wind, and the angel of the Lord will drive them away” (Psalms 35;5). Rather, we are called to trust in the Lord and see ourselves as He sees us. “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that send out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit” (Jeremiah 17:7-8). When our identity is firmly established in Christ, “then you will set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is not hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:1-3). As you move forward in faith, the Lord promises to establish your steps (Proverbs 16:9) and reminds you unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted (Psalm 127:1). It’s time to let go of anxiety and enjoy the Fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control; Galatians 5:22-23). Believe that “God has a plan and purpose for your life” (Jeremiah 29:11). “Trust in the Lord with all our heart, and lean not on our own understanding, acknowledge Him in all your ways, and God will make you path straight” (Proverbs 3:6).
