India, the world's largest democracy, is currently undergoing the hottest phase of the 17th general elections. There has been a grand alliance of almost all major political parties to evict Narendra Modi, the incumbent Prime Minister of India from power. Even an Indian Nobel Laureate also calling the present Government as 'autocrat' urged the Non-BJP parties to 'fight communalism' because 'Democracy is in danger' under BJP Government, which has been criticized by this author in the volume. However, the NDA leaders led by Narendra Modi are defending all allegations sometimes aggressively and often politely of the united Opposition forces. The debates on development by opposing economists have been nicely highlighted in the book. Further, the study seeks to examine the role of Indian democracy in achieving Sustainable Development Goals. The overall approach of the researcher is to focus at first on the theoretical and historical perspectives of Indian democracy and its various dimensions. After examining the complex nature of Indian democracy, some of its salient features are highlighted. In addition to that, the concept of Sustainable Development Goals, historical overview of the perception of Sustainable Development, correlation between human rights and human development, and various dimensions of human development have been elaborately explored. From goal settings in the new millennium to formulation of Sustainable Development Goals have been pointed out explicitly. The Millennium Development Goals and its achievements have been examined followed by the latest achievements in Sustainable Development Goals. But where does India, the sixth richest country, actually stand? To find the answer, a comparative method has been adopted to show India’s real position in terms of the G-20 countries. The socio-economic status of people in India has also been delineated. Further, the affirmative policies and programs undertaken by the Indian government have been highlighted. Despite several strategic, concrete and commendable policies there remain many gaps. Therefore, it was intended by the author to trace out the reasons of dis-satisfactory performance of the Government of India. What holds India back in achieving its goals of sustainable development is a big question. Hence, the major issues and constraints in contemporary India have been extensively examined. Finally, some concrete policy prescriptions have been extended to achieve sustainable human development and growth in India.
