It has come to the attention of a particularly outspoken resident of the run-down English seaside village of Socombe-by-the-Sea, the rather pompous retired Music Hall entertainer Archie Tickler, that certain development plans proposed by a detested and odious ex. inhabitant (Gladstone Mottley) are imminent. Characteristically, Archie takes it upon himself to attempt to rouse the semi-comatose villagers into frustrating said reprobate and his perceived scheme to evict dozens of humble but honest and hard-working tenants from their homes on his one-time Happy Daze Holiday Camp, with the object of selling the land to the Army.Among those bodies conscripted by Archie to play an active role are attractive and vivacious widow Blossom Furbelow, with whom Archie has nuptial aspirations, his lovesick nephew Randall Kyte, and the cause of his distracted condition, pretty French refugee Suzette la Plume, who, together with P. C. Horace Stamper and several others making up the numbers, embark on a series of humorous but inevitably embarrassing ventures. Mottley has been away from the village for many years prior to scenting some potentially profitable business back home but his return is far from welcome. The preoccupation with conceiving a way of thwarting his aspirations concentrates the minds of the villagers and the tale is interspersed with several memorable events, some specifically aimed at obstructing the arrogant and insensitive Mottley, whilst others are simply held to raise the morale of the locals with entertaining and diverting activities, hopefully also contributing to the church roof repair fund.Whilst away, Mottley had apparently managed to become affianced to the amiable but unfortunately bovine-featured Lady Muriel (call me 'Moo') Fairweather, seeing her as his ticket to untold riches and status. Unfortunately for him, the intrepid P.C. Stamper is on his trail, intent on exposing his distinctly doubtful past and to ultimately be able to dispel the anxieties of Archie and his disparate associates.Once the dust has settled, Randall and Suzette marry and the village settles back into a state of comfortable lethargy - but only until the onset of next set of crises, of course!
