What does the Sermon on the Mount, the declaration of Kingdom Living by the Lord Jesus Christ, mean and how does it apply to us? My Sophomore Bible class sought to answer this question and shared their findings in their writings. We also seek to give you the opportunity to do the same assignments so that you will grow in the grace of God. What an amazing experience to see and read my sophomores work to observe, or tell what they saw in the passages. The next step is to correctly interpret the passage. While there can be many observations and many applications, God only meant one thing by the words both spoken by the Holy Spirit through Matthew and by the very words spoken to His followers by the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living and True God. Finding that one meaning starts with what God wanted the original hearers and readers to understand. It involves understanding that each student of the Word has to be willing to consider other views because my view may be wrong or contain wrong elements. While research is important in this area, allowing the Holy Spirit to give insights is essential. This is the hardest part for my students because in our "Google world" we often go with the first answer that comes up. Going to multiple sources is important. Finally, it is necessary to ask how can this be used in my life or application? We want to be sure that we are both hearers of the Word as well as DOERS! Putting the message of the powerful Sermon on the Mount is an objective all my students shared. Our challenge to you is to do these assignments and seek to find your observations, the correct interpretation, and the applications of the Word to your everyday life.
